The goal of First Tooth is to reduce early childhood caries in Oregon by training medical and dental providers to implement preventive oral health services for infants and toddlers ages three and under. First Tooth offers a no-cost training for dental and medical organizations. The training is also available to WIC programs, Head Start programs, and other community groups that have a vested interest in the oral health of young children. A First Tooth training includes:

  • An in-office training/in-service, 1.5-2 hours in length depending on the organization's needs

  • Training for all providers and staff on how oral health preventive services can easily be integrated into current services

  • Instruction on fluoride varnish application

  • Culturally appropriate handouts, exam/waiting room posters, and information for caregivers

  • Guidelines to help refer children to a dental home by age one

Continued support and technical assistance from OrOHC oral health educators regarding systems-based implementation, workflow, and clinical instruction is provided. To request a training, e-mail Laura McKeane; for more information, or call (541) 778-9448.

Some materials are free and available for printing. Other materials must be ordered through OrOHC - please email Laura McKeane at lauramckeane@gmail.com. Ordered materials require a shipping and handling cost and will be sent by USPS unless otherwise noted. First Tooth trainers, please use the Trainer Material Order Form.
